Selecting a plot using our self-build database, understanding your budget, and shaping the vision for your dream home are all aspects of the process that aspiring self-builders can take control of.
But not everyone is a qualified architect, builder, or landscape professional. Every project needs help to make self-build aspirations a reality. But who can a self-builder turn to? Where can professionals be found? There are many resources out there, some hosted by professional bodies. This is a round-up of our top resources.
- NaCSBA: the National Custom and Self-Build Association is a one-stop-shop of information promoting self-build and custom-build as an effective form of housebuilding in the UK. There is plenty of advice for consumers to help them on the journey to a successful self-build.
- RIBA: The Royal Institute of British Architects is the professional body for architects – use their search function to find a RIBA-approved architect in your area.
- CIAT: the qualifying body for architectural technology is the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists.
- FMB: the Federation of Master Builders website contains a ‘Find a Builder’ function. Members are professionally vetted and independently inspected on joining so that customers can confidently build with a Master Builder.
There are also a vast array of books and magazines dedicated to self-build. One of the most well-known is The Housebuilder’s Bible by renowned housebuilder and renovator Mark Brinkley. Monthly publications include Homebuilding & Renovating, Self-Build & Design, and Build-It. And, of course, South Gloucestershire Council can provide help and advice on starting the self-build process in our area.
